ESSENTIAL INDICATORS

8AIR TESTS FOR

  • A paint roller resting on an open can of blue paint, with a cardboard surface underneath.

    VOCS

Chemicals from building materials, cleaning products, paint, cosmetics, air fresheners, furniture, dry cleaned clothing, and more, many VOCs are known carcinogens. VOCs are one of the primary groups of contaminants in indoor air and can cause headaches, dizziness, fatigue and even skin irritation. Many VOCs are not regulated and are found in everyday products in our homes.

  • Close-up view of a wooden OSB panel surface with visible wood chips and small black spots.

    FORMALDEHYDE

Typically found in adhesives, formaldehyde is a chemical used to produce pressed-wood products and used in flooring installations. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat.

  • Close-up of a concrete surface with small, light blue and dark brown discolorations and spots.

    MOLD

Mold spores can be found inside and outside the home and some types can cause allergic reactions. Mold spores in air are linked to health conditions including breathing problems, skin and eye irritation. Mold spores can be present in the air without visual evidence of mold in your home.

  • An unfinished basement with wooden framing, exposed ceiling beams, and a concrete floor. There are two small windows covered with plastic on the left side, and a white door on the right wall. A pipe protrudes from the floor, and an HVAC duct runs along the ceiling.

    RADON

A colorless, odorless radioactive gas that is naturally occurring and linked to lung cancer, radon can enter buildings through the basement or lowest level. Radon levels in enclosed spaces can pose a health risk, especially for children.

  • Cooking chicken nuggets in a frying pan on a stove, with a wooden spoon stirring the sauce. There is a bag of Tyson frozen crispy chicken strips in the background, along with a bowl of peaches and some loose peaches on the counter.

    PARTICULATES

Particulate matter including PM2.5 which is so small it is is not visible to the naked eye and can cause lung damage. PM2.5 includes particles less than 2.5 micrometers from a variety of sources such as smoke, dust, pollen and aerosols.

    CARBON DIOXIDE

An overall metric for the amount of fresh air in a building, high CO2 can indicate a build-up of toxic chemicals. High levels of CO2 can cause fatigue. Increasing fresh air in a building can alleviate health concerns and measuring CO2 is a good way to monitor whether or not there is enough fresh air exchange.

  • Close-up of a green leaf with water droplets on its surface.

    HUMIDITY
